Allotment Loving Plants to Grow This Season
When your hobby becomes a way of putting good, organic food on the table – there's no better feeling, right? Becoming an allotment expert might seem daunting, but growing your favourite vegetables is easier than you might think. And hey, we all have to start somewhere!
Our favourite vegetables to grow in an allotment are among the best for beginners, helping you brush up on your knowledge to graduate to more complicated produce. Here’s a few examples to get you started.
Tomatoes
The best tomato plants for beginners are bushes as they don’t need to be staked, nor do you need to pinch off buds. They’re low-maintenance and help you get to grips with the basics of tomato plants before moving on to Cordon types.
We suggest planting varieties like Tomato Tumbling Tom Red in containers or in the ground, depending on how much space you have in your allotment or vegetable patch.
Leeks
If growing from seeds, Leeks are best sown outdoors from March and April. However, we sell leeks as module plants, which saves you the effort of germinating your own seeds. Leeks are extremely hardy, and varieties that are ready to harvest in late autumn and winter can withstand even frost before they’re picked.
Varieties like Leek Mercurian are ideal for beginners, helping you get to grips with the ins and outs of growing your own Leeks before moving on to seeds if you’re feeling more adventurous.
Courgettes
Courgettes are a versatile plant, perfect for all sorts of dishes and perfect for your allotment. Not only are courgettes edible, but their little flowers that grow atop them are too! These easy-to-grow plants are another must-have for beginners, as they’re among the easiest to grow.
